Suyeon Kim (김수연, Kim Sooyeon) was the homeroom teacher of Class 1 at Yeongchan High. She was killed by 01 in order to save Chayeong, Jonpil and Jayden.
Appearance[]
Suyeon was a woman ( Who was probably between 30 to 40 years old) who had short brown hair and light skin. She usually wears round glasses along with a green shirt with black and white stripes along with black pants.
Personality[]
Suyeon was initially a very cold and ignorant teacher who does not care about the well-being of her students. It is implied she would even laugh at Gyuhwan when he wanted help from bullies who planted a funny picture on his back. Additionally, she was shown to be very selfish and only cared about her own survival, continually ignoring her responsibility as a teacher. She is also shown to be lazy and easily burned out, not wanting to spend time with her boyfriend after her retreat.
Suyeon has proven to be quite smart, as she quickly thought of marking the survivors so that they can identify themselves as humans and when she told Hyeyeon that it would do any good going out help somebody if they didn't know what to do to help.
Despite her flaws, she genuinely cared for Hyeyeon. After Hyeyeon's sacrifice for Gyuhwan, Suyeon subconciously took her on as a role model and was willing to sacrifice herself for her a student. In the end, Suyeon was shown as a person with extreme thoughts (since she wanted to save everyone even at the cost of her own life). In addition, she was someone with a big need of approval.
Background[]
Suyeon was one of the few teachers who did not want to have the school retreat near the MM-C lot. Unfortunately, the other teachers disagreed and went there anyways.
Plot[]
Suyeon's signal dies
Suyeon was present at the retreat, instructing students on the bus. When they got to the campus, she made the students put their phones away. Later, the other teachers went to the gym to watch the students' presentation but she showed no interest in going, remaining in the teacher's lounge. While talking to her boyfriend on the phone, she heard the shots being fired during the mayhem, but quickly stated that it was nothing. Before her boyfriend could finish talking, she started to hear a strange sound coming from her phone, unable to use it anymore.
When some scared students and teachers showed up in the staff room, they told Suyeon what happened in the gym. Though initially disbelieving, she ended up with the idea of marking everyone in the room with a marker so they could identify who was human. Her idea was soon discarded by Shinyeong, who claimed that the monsters would suck the individual's brain and then know the marks.
She remains behind while Gyuhwan's group heads out for help, but unfortunately 05 finds them and makes it to the lounge. Due to a screaming student, 05 ended up discovering their location, entering through the window and killing two students. Although Gyuhwan was about to shoot, 05 confronted him that none of them helped him when he suffered from Seongbin's assaults and proposed that he leave the others to die while he was free to escape. This startled the others, who begged Gyuhwan to shoot her. He eventually fired and while 05 attacked him and Shinyeong, Ms. Kim and the others fled. She eventually hid in one of the ladies' room stalls with her colleague, Hyeyeon.
Hyeyeon questioned if they should go out and help the students, but Suyeon stated that it wouldn't do any good as they didn't know how to fight the monsters and this would result in their deaths, stating that hiding and waiting for help would be the best option. Gyuhwan found them in the bathroom after hearing them, and Shinyeong pierced the two with his arrows, which had been dipped into the powder liquid from the shotgun capsules, confirming that they were human. Suyeon briefly questioned that the person responsible for creating the capsules already knew of the monsters' existence. Gyuhwan invited them to join them to the crashed truck where he found the shotgun.
Suyeon is suspicious of Gyuhwan
Following him to the cliff where he previously fell, Suyeon questions herself on how Gyuhwan survived falling down the cliff with no bruises. She asks Hyeyeon to keep a lookout while she, Gyuhwan and Shinyeong search inside the truck. After discovering the corpse of the driver, they hear together a voicemail left by him before his death, saying about a dangerous creature named Zero and how he must be killed immediately. They then see smoke in the distance in the retreat grounds and together, go investigate.
After a brief confrontation with Director Lee and Seonyeob, who were trying to get their hands on the shotgun, 04 appears and kills Director Lee after he tried to shot him, then attacking Gyuhwan. She stays outside the fight alongside Hyeyeon before the two are covered by the smoke that 04 created. When Gyuhwan manages to shot him, he rushes over to kill him with a punch, only to Hyeyeon push him out of way, sacrificing herself for him.
After 04 left, Suyeon rushed beside Hyeyeon in tears, questioning her decision to help and not stay put like her. Hyeyeon states, in her final moments, that she only did it because it felt like the right thing to do, since she was teacher. When she passes away in her arms, Suyeon cries in denial, begging her to wake up. She and Seonyeob remain behind while the others head to chase after Gyuhwan who seeks revenge on 04.

Suyeon team's up with Seonyeob and Chayeong
Seonyeob asks Suyeon what they should do, so she angrily tells him she doesn't want to help him and wanted to go somewhere else for retreat. She then proceeds to kick Lee's corpse for being the one who wanted to come, so Seonyeob grabs her. They are then approached by Chayeong Park and the three team up to go to the MM Facilities an hide in the underground bunker Chayeong found out before. When they reach the elevator, they realized it was going up and hide behind some boxes. After the MM soldiers gets out, Suyeon run towards them for help and explaining about the monsters. The three of them are tested and the soldiers guides them to a unknown location, but Suyeon and Seonyeob noticed that they were heading towards the the incinerator.
Suyeon throws herself at the grenade to protect Seonyeob
Suyeon confronts the soldiers about it and gets punched in the stomach. She and Seonyeob stay on the ground as Gyuhwan's group arrives and Zero protects them from the bullets. The soldiers retreat, but one of them throws a grenade in the floor. In a selfless act to protect Seonyeob, Suyeon thinks one last time in Hyeyeon before throwing herself at the grenade and exploding.
She find herself back in that cubicle in the ladies' bathroom, where she had been hiding with Hyeyeon. Suyeon imagines that Hyeyeon, on the other side of the cubicle, tells her that she thought she said that "I wouldn't jump into the water without knowing how to swim" ,Suyeon says yes, that she said it , but she doesn't know why she decided to sacrifice herself. Finally Hyeyeon tells her that she did a good job anyway, and congratulates her for it. Making her insecure but happy, and Suyeon asked her if she really believed that. She wakes up finding out that zero saved her from the grenade, Jayden praised her for doing a good job and Seonyeob thanks her for saving him.
After that, she and the rest of the group....
Relationships[]
Gyuhwan Han[]
She didn't seem to care about him and probably knew he as a victim of Seongbin Yu's bullying, but did not do anything to stop it. Gyuhwan hated her because of that. He imagined himself killing her first in his classroom, then planning on killing her with his classmates when founded the shotgun. Despite their differences, the two eventually team up to survive.
Gyuhwan despite everything, is cooperative in working with her, open to hearing her opinions when she decides to talk to him.
Suyeon doesn't really seem to hate or despise him, despite her past attitude towards him.
Despite everything, she doesn't seem to really know about the terrible things Seongbin is capable of, this is shown when she looks surprised and perhaps even incredulous, when Gyunwhan tells her, that Seongbin is killing the other survivors.
Finally, Suyeon shows bewilderment and even concern, when One claims that she didn't do anything when Gyuhwan was being bullied, which makes Suyeon feel really bad; something that could say that perhaps she was unaware or ignored the situation as it was; but finally ends up filling her with guilt for not having done anything to help him
Hyeyeon Ahn[]
She seemed to be close to her, Suyeon really cared for her and tried hard to keep her alive. Her death really affected Suyeon, coming to sadly and desperately reproach Hyeyeon for sacrificing herself. In her last moments of life, Hyeyeon admits to a sad Suyeon that she did it because she felt it was the right thing to do since she was a teacher. Suyeon cries in denial after when she dies.
It seemed to be really important to her, as she is the one who later drives Suyeon to attempt to sacrifice herself for one of her students.
Suyeon seems really affected by her death, she seems to feel a lot of guilt about it and ends up reflecting her wish that she saved her, trying to sacrifice herself for Seonyeob.
After Suyeon was saved from dying thanks to Zero, while unconscious, she imagines herself back in that cubicle in the ladies' bathroom, where she had been hiding with Hyeyeon. Suyeon imagines that Hyeyeon, on the other side of the cubicle, tells her that she thought she said that "I wouldn't jump into the water without knowing how to swim" ,Suyeon says yes, that she said it , but she doesn't know why she decided to sacrifice herself. Finally Hyeyeon tells her that she did a good job anyway, and congratulates her for it. This making her insecure but happy, and Suyeon asked her if she really believed that, before waking up. In her final confrontation with One, she recalls what she had previously said about "jumping in the water", reminded of the sacrifice of her friend, she sacrifices herself to save Jayden, Jongpil and Chayeong.
Director Lee[]
They were both work colleagues, but didn't have extreme interactions with each other, although Suyeon secretly hated him due to him having the idea of the school going to the camp. After his death, she continually kicks and insult his corpse in anger for "bringing her into this mess."
The first time they are seen together they are talking in the staff room when Suyeon shows her disinterest in going to see her students talent show, to which he expresses with a smugly says they should go because the kids worked so hard at the talent show. Suyeon is somewhat surprised and uncomfortable at his answer.
Seonyeob Kim[]
As his homeroom teacher, she either didn't notice or didn't care her was being bullied. After surviving an attack from 04, the two team up together. Unforutnately, the two don't seem to get along well, as Seonyeob cowardly relies on her for help and Suyeon doesn't feel a need to protect him. She seems to be quite important to him, which is shown when one of the soldiers punches Suyeon in the stomach and he immediately defends her, throwing himself on top of one of the soldiers.
However, despite everything, she ends up trying to sacrifice herself for him, throwing herself on the grenade thrown by one of MM's soldiers, to protect him. She's distressed after One kills him in front of her.
Unnamed boyfriend[]
While not much is known about their relationship, Suyeon does not seem to be a very affectionate girlfriend but they both seem to have good communication as a couple. Also, her contact name for him in the English translation is "Boyfriend."

- She bites her nails when she is thoughtful or nervous.
- In the call with her boyfriend, they both talk about a certain "Hyeonjeon", but it is not known exactly who he is.
