Sanggwon Ahn is a student at Yeongchan High in Class 1. He was one of Gyuhwan's bullies under Seongbin Yu. After the gym massacre, he temporarily forms a group with Seongbin, Chanhyeok Park and Hayeong Lee [Note 1], but then becomes a lone survivor after being exposed to some of their true natures. He later joins Gyuhwan's group, and they all survived until the end.

Appearance[]

Sanggwon has a tall muscular build and black buzz cut hair. He is often seen wearing a black t-shirt under a green tracksuit, unlike most students who wear a white uniform.

Personality[]

On the surface, Sanggwon is an arrogant and cocky bully like his friends, smiling at Gyuhwan's suffering. He appears to be the brute of the three, using his muscle to get his way. Despite being Seongbin's right-hand man, he does not actually like him, likely only sticking with him out of fear and/or his status.

Despite appearing stupid and brutish, Sanggwon is actually a logical thinker. He is able to think ahead and calculate what his actions will lead to. He is the first to pick up on Seongbin's psychopathic qualities.

Compared to his bullying friends, Sanggwon has much more redeeming qualities. He is kind-hearted and protective of others deep down, especially shown in his interactions with Shinyeong. Although his friendship with Seongbin is fake, he seems to have a genuine friendship with Chanhyeok. Initially, he had no issues tormenting Gyuhwan but after breaking off with Seongbin, he learns his way and is apologetic to Gyuhwan. Although he remains somewhat of a coward, he is mature enough to do what is right, such as calling out Samshik for killing Chanhyeok.

Plot[]

Sanggwon first appears in Gyuhwan's dream, assisting Seongbin with his bullying.

Sanggwon threatens Gyuhwan

Threatening Gyuhwan

He is later seen on the bus to the retreat with Seongbin and Chanhyeok. When Seongbin asks Gyuhwan if he wants to switch rooms with Sanggwon, he gives him a threatening glare. Gyuhwan agrees but then Seongbin asks if it's really important for him to room with him. Sanggwon said he couldn't care less. When they arrive at the campus, Sanggwon and everyone else put their phones in a bag. During inspection, Sanggwon and Chanhyeok mock the instructor. During drills, Sanggwon threatens anyone who makes them redo jumping jacks. He is visibly angered when Gyuhwan accidentally says the key word.

Archery Boys

Archery with Chanhyeok

Sanggwon is later seen doing archery practice with Chanhyeok, wondering where Seongbin is. They notice Shinyeong Kang practicing nearby and Sanggwon comments that he has a crush on her. Chanhyeok informs him he'll become an outcast for talking to another outcast. Sanggwon then gets frustrated. Sanggwon wonders why Seongbin even came to the retrat and says he's sick of Seongbin's stupid act.

Chanhyeok and Sanggwon at Gym

Witnessing the gym massacre

He is seen at the talent show alongside Chanhyeok, wondering where Seongbin is. He is shown to be shocked when the lights go out and the variants begin to attack people. During this attack, Chanhyeok screams at him to do something. Sanggwon asks what he's supposed to say and informs Chanhyeok that "they aren't even human." Once Gyuhwan arrived with a shotgun, he managed to escape with Chanhyeok.

Chanhyeok and Sanggwon eventually found a cave and tried to set a fire. As the two were discussing recent events, such as Gyuhwan trying to hunt them all down, Seongbin and Hayeong overheard their conversation. They inform each other on recent events and Sanggwon wonders if Gyuhwan is going to see them as "human." Outside, "Hayeong" notices a mysterious light. Seongbin since Chanhyeok to investigate it. Sanggwon asks why Seongbin would sacrifice Chanhyeok like that. Seongbin replies that Chanhyeok is useless unlike him, but if he wanted to, he could send him instead. Sanggwon humbly accepted. Chanhyeok finds a mysterious child and calls out to the group. They are forced to watch Seongbin kill the child after it angers him. In order to silence Sanggwon and the others, Seongbin "coercions" them it was a monster.

Later, Sanggwon informs the Hayeong and Chanhyeok that they shouldn't trust Seongbin, since he might kill them next. They then run into Chayeong Park, who claims to be running from a monster. When a blood-lusted Seongbin chases after her, Sanggwon tries to stop him. Seongbin doesn't listen, responding that they need to kill off all other survivors. The group follows Seongbin, who chases after the girl. Not long after, Seongbin passes out from a nosebleed. Hayeong then informs Chanhyeok and Seongbin that Seongbin has awakened a tumor, which alarms them. She then reveals to them that she has been a variant named Samshik the entire time. Samshik asks that they keep this a secret, to which they scaredly agree. Samshik then says one of them must die. Sanggwon doesn't beg for his life, so Samshik swings a tentacle by him, just missing his head. She says she was joking and she'll let him live, since they have a common enemy.

The group hears something, so Seongbin sends Chanhyeok to check again. Chanhyeok is then restrained by Shinyeong, who pokes him with a venomized arrow. After a debate between Shinyeong's group and his, Shinyeong asks Sanggwon if he'll cooperate with him. Sanggwon agrees, but is demanded to stop by Seongbin. Seongbin says he'll kill him if he listens to her, but Sanggwon approaches her anyway. He asks if her arrow can really kill variants, so she says yes. Sanggwon imagines himself telling her that "Hayeong" is actually a variant, but stops himself when he realizes that will cause unnecessary trouble. Sanggwon then awkwardly laughs it off along with Chanhyeok. Jayden requests that they cooperate, but Seongbin rebuts and asks Sanggwon and Chanhyeok to come back down. Sanggwon gives her a glance before regrouping with his friends and heading out.

While travelling, the group notices notices a group of soldiers leading two students. Suddenly the soldiers shoot the students, leading Chanhyeok to scream. One of the soldiers heard this and started nearing the group, so Samshik suddenly pushes Chanhyeok, using him as bait so they can get away. Eventually, they take a breather and Sanggwon calls out Hayeong's ruthless action who in return gives him a glare. Seongbin then backs him up and asks why she'd do that. Sanggwon then reveals then that she's actually a monster, which leads Samshik to want to kill him for revealing her secret. Samshik then asks Seongbin how to kill him and explains her plans to Seongbin. She offers Seongbin protection, but only on the condition he kills Sanggwon.

Relationships[]

Seongbin Yu[]

Sanggwon has always been Seongbin's right hand. Despite their closeness, Sanggwon doesn't like Seongbin's intense methods of bullying, but doesn't say anything because he's too afraid to stand up to him. Once he starts too see Seongbin's more psychotic side, his fears only get worse for him and he stops trusting him. Seongbin in turn, only saw Sanggwon as useful due to his bulky nature and likely didn't consider him a real friend either. He is also seemingly unconcerned when Sanggwon's life is in danger. He is aware that Sanggwon has always secret hated him. Eventually, when Sanggwon nearly leaves Seongbin's side to save himself, Seongbin threatens to kill him. Surprisingly, however, when Samshik offers Seongbin protection if he kills Sanggwon, Seongbin refuses and lets Sanggwon run away, though this is partly because Samshik called Seongbin a loser.

Chanhyeok Park[]

Chanhyeok and Sanggwon were very close friends. They were always hanging out together and both took part with Seongbin in bullying of other students. Despite being close friends, Chanhyeok was willing to sacrifice him for his own survival. Sanggwon doesn't seem to feel this way, though.

Gyuhwan Han[]

Sanggwon has no problem assisting Seongbin in his bullying. He does seem aware that Gyuhwan might want to kill him for contributing to his bullying.

Shinyeong Kang[]

Sanggwon seems to have a crush on Shinyeong. This is further shown by the concerned look on his face when Seongbin was bullying her in the past. Unfortunately, he wouldn't talk to her since she was the school outcast. The two interact after the variant attack, when Sanggwon approaches her group and tries to tell her about how one of his partners is a monster but then decides not to out of danger, though trying to signal her for help.
