Background[]

Joon Shin was a former drug dealer who was arrested by Wook Pyeon and sentenced to jail. During the Monster Apocalypse, he led a group of prisoners through a jail-break and stole a prison bus. Prior to meeting with the survivors, he and his gang have been traveling the country from safe zone to safe zone. They presumably took advantage of the survivors and resources there. In the event that anything went irreparably wrong, they would slaughter the survivors there and use their remains as bait to distract the monsters while the gang made a getaway.

Appearance[]

Joon Shin was a physically imposing man, standing slightly taller than Wook Pyeon. He is muscular and athletically fit in build. He has fair skin and shaved brown hair and a scar over his left eye. He wears a v-neck shirt.

As a monster, he is a gigantic humanoid with a sideways mouth on his chest. Only the front part of his face seems to remain, however, his eyes are bloodshot and the left one pops out. He also has a large upper body frame with large, long arms.

Personality[]

Joon Shin is a very manipulative, amoral, and cruel man. He is clever enough to leverage the fake promise of essential resources to coerce the survivors into cooperation. He uses draconian methods to exert dominance over his gang and the survivors, such as threats of killing people who oppose him. He is, however, careful not to kill someone who may prove useful, such as those able to control their own monster. He is usually cold and calculating, but loses his temper when people disobey his commands. He also appears to hold a grudge against Pyeon as he was visibly enraged when challenged by Wook. Ultimately, Joon is selfish and isn't above abandoning his own gang if things go awry and is willing to turn into a monster in order to live.

Plot[]

Joon Shin and his gang arrived on a bus after Byeong-Il unwittingly asked for their help, quickly eliminating the Steroid Monster by ramming into it with their reinforced prison bus. Afterwards, Wook immediately recognized them as criminals. Joon, however, points out that he had the upper hand in the situation as his bus (according to him) had food and a generator. That enabled the gang to establish control over the survivors.

Joon learns there are several people in the apartment who are turning into monsters, and learns the survivors only trust one of the infected. He first confronts Hyun Cha, the only infected who has some degree of control over his monsterification. He attempts to convince Hyun to join him, using Ihyun Jo's control over his monster to forcefully convince Hyun, but he eventually backed down when Hyun points out that he isn't willing to kill Hyun no matter what his answer was. He then confronts Seon Anh, with the Jay Ryu having turned into a monster and broke through the ceiling to the floor above. He uses Seon Anh as an example of what he will do to anyone who shows signs of infection: Execute them. The gunshot, however, attracts the attention of the Tentacle Monster, but Joon and his gang quickly put it down. Joon hammers in the point further when the Slime Monster controls Seon Anh's corpse, and he ordered the monster to be incinerated even though some survivors managed to convince it to run away peacefully and not caring that the monster was formerly a toddler.

Joon later imprisons and talks with Wook and Hyuk Lee, reminding them of who has the leverage in the situation. He keeps them restrained as he goes about establishing his control. He is shocked when he learns that Sangsu let people go to the upper floors and that Wook and Hyuk have escaped. He notices monsters are starting to break through the barricades and decides to use the gang's emergency escape plan. He kills Sangsu for bait, but Hyun and Jisu witness it. He overpowers Hyun and attempts to use Jisu as a hostage. Hyuk, however, attacks Joon from behind and holds him at gunpoint. Joon Shin, however, knows Hyuk won't fire the gun as it would attract all the monsters to the area.

The monsters manage to break through the barricades and kill Hoyeon. This forces Hyuk and the other survivors to flee, which frees Joon Shin. Joon and Hyunshik Lim to escape to the bus. Joon prepares to leave immediately. Hyunshik attempts to protest, but Joon points out there are way too many monsters for even Ihyun to fight off. Wook arrives and challenges Joon for control of the bus. At first, Joon appears to have the upper hand, but is shocked to learn that Wook managed to get the bus key. Wook resumes the fight and manages to throw Joon outof the bus. Wook also throws a beeping phone to attract a monster's attention, who spits acid at Joon's head. Joon is able to survive with severe injuries, albeit deaf and nearly blind. As he contemplates his fate, an unseen monster in the woods extends its tongue and grabs Joon by the throat and pulls Joon away.

Later, a dying Joon meets a strange woman who is impressed he, a mere human, was able to defeat several monsters. She questions whether he wishes to live, even if that means becoming a monster. He concedes and answers affirmatively.

Joon's final appearance is on the rooftop as the last survivors attempt to flee Green Roof Apartments. He is now a hulking monster with a wide, vertical mouth filled with spike-like teeth on his stomach, but still immediately recognizable to the survivors as who he once was. He kills his two surviving henchmen without hesitation and knocks back Wook, Jisu, and Hyuk with brute force. In a last, desperate attempt to save those he cares about, Hyun finally succumbs to his monster and transforms into a full monster, obliterating Joon with his spear in a single attack.

Monster abilities[]

As a monster, Joon Shin becomes even more tall and physically imposing than his human form. Similar to the Steroid Monster, his muscles are swollen. He still retains most of his human face, though his eyes are now bulging, enlarged, and red. The monster appears to be motivated by the human's hatred of monsters and adversaries. Due to his speed and strength possessed, Joon's monster form is the second strongest monster in the series.

  • Limited Sentience: Joon, in his monster form, appears to retain some memories of his human life. He is the only person to call a human by their name (Wook) and can express simple phrases to show emotion
  • Extreme Durability: Similar to all monsters, Joon's monster is almost impervious to conventional methods of killing and maiming, and its skin is so thick, Hyun's spear didn't leave a mark on it. Only the strength of another monster was able to destroy him.
  • Extreme Speed and Athleticism: Joon's monster possesses extreme speed despite its large size. It was able to rip off half of Ihyun's body without Ihyun even noticing. Additionally, it was able to jump up from the ground to the roof of Green Roof apartments, the equivalent of 16 floors.
  • Shockwave Scream: The force of Joon's scream was enough to knock back Jisu, Wook, and Hyuk off their feet.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • According to Carnby Kim, he is the most powerful monster in Sweet Home, having a 6-star attack stat and 6-star defense stat.[6]
