Jayden

Jayden is a foreign teacher at Yeongchan High. After the gym massacre, he becomes an ally to Gyuhwan Han and his group.

Appearance[]

Jayden is a tall, muscular man with sandy blond hair and ocean blue eyes. He wears a dark blue short-sleeve shirt and black pants. After an equipment hunt,^[1] he started wearing a construction helmet with a flashlight on it.

Personality[]

Jayden is rather friendly and easy-going individual, he can be calm and collected even in the dire situation. Additionally, he is brave enough to put himself in danger to save his fellow students. Despite his good traits, he is somewhat naïve, as he was unaware of Seongbin's true nature. He is also somewhat careless as he fell asleep when hiding in a cave from monsters.

Background[]

Sometime in the past, Jayden was asked to join the swordsmanship club by his colleague, Jayhun. He did not join.

Plot[]

Jayden is first seen among the other teachers helping the students settle into the retreat grounds. He is later seen in the teacher's lounge playing a card game with Director Lee, who thinks he is cheating.

Jayden is at the talent show alongside some other teachers. When the variants attacks, they are paralyzed with fear. One variant, 04, notices him and goes to kill him. Just then, Shinyeong confronts them, distracting the variants. Suddenly, Gyuhwan appears in the gym with a shotgun and kills a variant. 04 tries to throw a student at Gyuhwan, but he's saved by Jayden who caught the student. Eventually, the variants decide to to flee, so Jayden and other teachers and students try to call the police but their cellphones are making a loud noise. He joins the group to the teacher's lounge, where they tell Ms. Kim what happened. When Gyuhwan and Shinyeong are planning to use the PE teacher's car to escape, Jayden steps forward saying he cannot let two students go alone. He eventually accompanies them to the gym. At one point, he snaps out Gyuhwan of his daze; then, he calls him again to cover him up; and finally, he, Gyuhwan and Shinyeong retrieve the PE teacher's car keys and get in the car in order to go outside.

Once they're in the car, Jayden turns on the headlights and noticing 05 in front of her, she tries to kill them with one of her tentacles, but Jayden accelerates the car, pulling her along. She manages to destroy one of the wheels, causing the car to lose control and leaving the three unconscious.

Jayden regains consciousness a long time later, heading straight to a storage room to pick up some weapon to defend himself. There, he recalls when his colleague, Jayhun, offered him swordsmanship lessons, regretting that he had not accepted. One of the surviving students, Jongpil, finds him confirming with him the previously made marks, and the two arm themselves and leave together. During their escape of the school, they are discussing how to call for help, and Jayden purposes Jongpil to use the landline phone from the employees office; however, Jongpil tells him it can be hardly possible to use it because of the true identity of the employees, so he proposes him to light a beacon on the rooftop to get someone's attention to rescue them, and they decide to do it and leave before to get killed by the Variants. They rush out before to get killed. By the gym, they find the corpses of Jinhui Noh, Sujin Park and someone else.

They eventually run into Gyuhwan's group, who is being attacked by 04. Jongpil plays the flute to distract it, so Jayden can cut off the monster's finger, making it drop the shotgun it took, allowing Gyuhwan to reclaim it. It mocks Jayden while he tries to hold it still. It then tries to kill Jayden, but is stopped by Shinyeong's arrow. 04 then blows a smokescreen and steps away.

Sometimes during their fight, Gyuhwan chases after the monster. Shinyeong, Jongpil and Jayden decide to go after him. While looking for him, they run into Chanhyeok Park and hold him hostage, which alerts his nearby group of Seongbin, Sanggwon and "Hayeong". Shinyeong does a monster check on Chanhyeok, causing Seongbin to snap out at her. Jayden interjects and says that they need to check if everyone is a monster, but Seongbin angrily refuses to comply. Jongpil reprimands Seongbin for disrespecting his teacher. Seongbin then to kill his friend threatens if they join up with her. Jayden asks Jongpil what's wrong with him and Jongpil says he's always been like that, which surprises Jayden. After some more arguing, Jayden states that he thinks the groups should cooperate, but they are unable to, do to Seongbin's rudeness. They head out and Jayden asks if they'll be okay.

Later, Jayden and his group find Gyuhwan who is near a trapped Zero. They want to kill him, but Gyuhwan interjects. Eventually, Shinyeong tries to kill the child, so he retaliates and attacks her. Jayden is scared by this and proceeds to call Zero a monster, who then telekinetically rips off his arms, causing severe bleeding damage. Afterwards having a change of heart, Zero restored his arms.

later on he is then seen in later chapters helping the group survive and trying to escape

Abilities[]

Jayden is a fairly well-built and athletic teacher. He is able to catch an obese child with seemingly no problem and restrain Four with his arms.^[2]

Equipment: His main weapon is the machete and in his main equipment is a construction helmet with a light on it.

Relationships[]

Jayhun Jung[]

They are colleagues from Yeongchan high school, and it is seen when Jayden takes a sword and remembers to see the sword club ad (supervised by Jayhun himself).

Jongpil Shin[]

Jongpil and Jayden get along well. They seem to have more of a casual friendship than a student-teacher one. Sometime after the attack, the two decide to light a smoke signal together. They also work together to take down the variant, 04. Jongpil also defends Jayden when he is being insulted by Seongbin.

Gyuhwan Han[]

Jayden and Gyuhwan become allies after the Gym massacre. Jayden seems to be one of the few people at Yeongchan High who actually cares about Gyuhwan. In turn, Gyuhwan eventually starts to develop respect for him.

Shinyeong Kang[]

Like with Gyuhwan, he becomes allies with her after the Gym massacre.

Suyeon Kim[]

Both are co-workers and seem to be close. Which is shown when Suyeon defends him, telling Shinyeong not to talk to his teacher like that. when he is speaking to him in a somewhat direct and informal way. In addition to that, Jayden congratulates her, saying that she is awesome, when she survives after trying to sacrifice herself for one of her students. And later on, Jayden offers her to close her eyes and he will lead her down the hallway littered with corpses.
